Our iDeals review

iDeals at a glance

iDeals is one of the more widely used virtual data room (VDR) platforms in the mid-market and enterprise space, and it is a name that comes up often when New Zealand advisers scope a room for M&A or capital raising diligence. Its reputation rests on three things: rooms that go live quickly, granular security controls, and 24/7 support. In our hands-on testing during June 2026 it lived up to that billing, with a clean interface that external bidders and advisers picked up with little training.

This review covers what iDeals does well, where it is weaker for a New Zealand buyer, and who it suits. As with every provider we cover, this is an independent editorial assessment, see our full reviews index for how it compares.

Setup speed and everyday use

The standout for us was how fast a usable room comes together. We had a structured room, folder tree, watermarks and role-based permissions, live within about an hour. For a sell-side process where a deal can move from mandate to first data request in days, that responsiveness matters.

Day to day, the interface is uncluttered. Bulk upload, drag-and-drop folder building and automatic index numbering all behaved as expected, and the viewer rendered large PDFs and spreadsheets without the lag some competitors show. External users, the people you least want to be troubleshooting for, generally found their way around without a walkthrough.

Security and permissions

Security is where iDeals invests heavily, and it shows. The platform is certified to ISO 27001 and SOC 2, and is GDPR compliant, which maps well to the expectations of NZ acquirers, offshore bidders and institutional investors doing diligence here.

The controls go well beyond passwords. You get up to eight levels of document access rights, dynamic watermarking, fence view (to deter over-the-shoulder capture and screenshots), built-in redaction, remote shred of already-downloaded files, a secure spreadsheet viewer, and time- and IP-based restrictions. Permissioning is genuinely granular, down to individual documents and, in places, page level, which is what you want when different bidder groups must see different things.

The built-in Q&A module is also solid for managing investor and buyer questions in a structured, auditable way rather than over email, with activity tracking that gives the deal team a clear audit trail.

Pricing and value for New Zealand

This is the main friction point. iDeals does not publish list pricing, you contact sales for a quote, and the cost is typically project-based rather than a flat monthly subscription, driven by pages uploaded, users invited and how long the room stays open. Our indicative figure of around NZD $690/month is a starting reference only; your actual price depends on the deal, and you should treat any number as a draft until you have a written quote. Advanced reporting and some admin features also sit in higher tiers.

For a well-funded M&A or syndication process, the value is defensible, the security depth and support are real. For a lean startup raise or a smaller property syndication, the quote-only model and enterprise positioning can feel like more than the job needs, and the lack of transparent pricing makes budgeting harder up front.

Support

Support is a genuine strength. It is staffed 24/7, and in our testing responses landed quickly even across New Zealand business hours, a real consideration given many global VDRs run on Northern Hemisphere clocks. The trade-off is that there is no NZ office; help is remote, so you are relying on that round-the-clock desk rather than a local account manager who understands the New Zealand market first-hand.

Verdict

iDeals is a strong, security-first data room that earns its place on any NZ shortlist for time-pressured, multi-party diligence, fast to stand up, tightly permissioned and well supported. The reservations are practical rather than about quality: quote-only pricing, an enterprise lean that can overshoot smaller deals, and no local presence. If security depth and setup speed top your list, it is a credible, capable option worth demoing; for a lighter, self-serve alternative with transparent NZD pricing, Ellty is worth comparing.
